Human Resources

Human Resources is related to managing employer and employee relations, making sure laws are complied with and addressing various issues and concerns that emerge throughout the normal course of operating a business.  This is a constantly developing and evolving field and human resource professionals can find themselves doing a wide array of jobs from holding job fairs to consulting businesses.

There are numerous jobs related to human resources and some of the more common ones include labor relations managers, affirmative action coordinators and training specialists.  Most positions in the field require a bachelor's degree, and many graduates opt to minor in a related field to compliment their portfolio.

Many schools offer variations on human resources degrees, including graduate programs for those who have degrees in related fields.  Additionally, some schools offer accelerated programs that can fast track students through undergraduate and graduate studies in as little as five years.

A typical undergraduate course of study will include marketing, economics, management, federal income taxation, business law and even courses in the social sciences.  Having contact with these various disciplines will help prepare the graduate to serve the human resources needs of a wide range of companies, and the unique needs and requirements of managing their workforce.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth in the field is expected to be well above average through 2018.  As the healthcare bill takes effect as well as various other measures related to safety, wages and retirement, more and more companies are expected to look for trained and qualified professionals capable of managing these issues.

In addition to a better than average job outlook, human resource professionals are on track to continue earning substantial salaries over the course of their careers.  Due to the dynamic nature of the field, there are numerous ways to apply a degree in human resource management in fields of particular interest.
