Degree
Certificate

A certificate is typically issued as proof of a student's attendance and satisfactory completion of a course of a practical nature. As a result, it is popular among the various professions where actually being able to do a job is far more relevant than knowing the theory behind it - although that helps, too, of course.

Because of its almost universal appeal, it can be awarded by just about any trade such as programming, healthcare, auto mechanics, plastering etc. Often these courses are taught by experienced practitioners of the specific trade, making them similar in many ways to the old-fashioned 'on-the-job' training.

Unlike other awards, the certificate has no specific level - its value is what it attests regarding the holder’s capabilities. Accordingly there is no 'equivalence' among certificates - i.e. it cannot be said that a certificate in plumbing is of the same level as a certificate in accounting, for example. Each has its own merit.

Some professions require certification prior to practicing even though the candidate may be in possession of a Bachelor's or even Master's degree.
