Political Science

Political Science involves the research and study of politics and political systems.  While political science is its own area of study and practice, social sciences and an understanding of human behavior and nature are a big part of this domain.

Students are attracted to political science for a number of reasons, some of whom will run for office or aspire to have a career in government, while others will go on to law school, journalism or education.  Political science is a popular minor for students to take to round out their degree, especially with business majors.

Graduates holding a political science degree can see work in a number of areas including politics, campaign management and law.  Much of what political scientists do has to do with research, public policy and political decision making.

While the majority of graduates end up working in politics, many find employment within numerous civic, religious or social organizations.  Additionally, graduates who continue their education to include a Master's degree or PhD will have the best and most lucrative job prospects and the most options to choose from.

Courses for the political science major include American as well as international politics, government, criminal law and geography.  Additionally other courses such as comparative politics as well as studying the United Nations are offered in many programs.  Understanding how different governmental systems work, as well as some of the benefits as well as short comings will give the graduate a well developed foundation to build upon.

The employment forecast for political scientists is expected to grow better than average in the next few years.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a 21 percent increase in the field through 2018.  Part of the growth is the recent resurgence of interest in foreign policy and international relations.
