Sociology

Sociology is the study of people and groups and how they interact with one another as well as within larger areas.  Studying societies and how they work includes looking at factors such as social classes, religion, cultures, government as well as crime and social movements, just to name a few.

Many sociologists continue their education beyond the undergraduate level in order to teach or do research, but students with a Bachelor's degree can find work as writers, analysts or researchers.  Some other career tracks include social work, counseling, public administration as well as urban planning.  Sociology is a good starting point for students interested in pursuing degrees in areas such a psychology or anthropology and history.

Sociology is a field that is heavily based on research, and research and writing are large components to a degree in sociology.  One of the benefits is that as students advance through their studies and develop their career path, they can create their own research based on topics and subjects that are of particular interest to them.

Coursework common in sociology programs can include statistics, research and writing, data analysis, criminology, anthropology and psychology.  Sociology is a very integrated discipline and requires a working knowledge of other aspects of human understanding. It is also a very fluid field of study, and as people and societies change, so does the study of sociology.

Becoming a social worker or counselor is one of the main reasons people pursue a degree in sociology, however entrance into these fields requires specific advanced study and clinical experience.

Job prospects for the next few years indicate that sociologists will do better than average in terms of entering a growing field.  Many positions will include policy analysts and research assistants.  For graduates with higher degrees, teaching and advising positions will also see a better than average increase in the next few years.
