Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of basic substances and how they interact to make up everything that we experience in life.  Chemistry takes a look at what things are made of along with their properties and how they interact with each other.

A Bachelor's degree in chemistry will introduce students to the world of chemistry from the atom to elements and how they work together.  Programs introduce students to the four components of the domain of chemistry which are physical, organic, inorganic and analytical.  If students wish to pursue advanced degrees, their studies will become more specialized as they move through the program.

Methodical research and experimentation are big parts of a chemistry degree, and students should be comfortable with handling different substances and spending a lot of time in the lab.  They learn how to approach lab research in a safe way while discovering how different chemicals interact with one another.

An undergraduate degree will provide access to many entry level positions in research labs, teaching, forensic science, along with opportunities in the pharmaceutical or agricultural industries.  Many use chemistry as a foundation for graduate studies in pharmacy, in addition to medical school and many other specialized fields.

The vast  majority of career positions in the field of chemistry require advanced and specialized training, especially in areas of medicine and higher education.  Some of these can include research and development opportunities, medical school and teaching at the collegiate level.

The job market for chemistry related professions is hard to predict because the field is so broad.  The best outlook surrounds research and careers in the public health arena.  This is especially true as research continues to explode in the areas of molecular biology and the understanding of DNA.  Chemists also play a crucial role in product development as well.
