Journalism

As long as there has been news to report and people interested in hearing about it, journalists have had a role in society.  Charged with finding, exposing and reporting news worthy events, journalists have come a long way since posting notices on sign posts or carving pictures in caves.

Surrounded by information, the world relies heavily on journalists to disseminate and relate news worthy events in ways that are interesting and informative.  The journalism degree helps students to prepare for this exciting field by familiarizing them with a range of courses related to the field.

A bachelor's degree is generally adequate to pursue a career in journalism, however many professionals also continue their studies at the graduate level.  Since journalism is a hybrid of different disciplines, students will be exposed to various elements that can contribute to a well rounded degree that prepares them for the demands of the modern journalistic environment.

Most courses of study will have components of ethics, philosophy, writing, research, sociology, psychology and political science.  Additionally courses in communication as well as literature are important in developing the analytical skills necessary to be successful in today's industry.

Journalism graduates have the benefit of being able to report on a wide range of topics and subjects that interest them, from fashion to travel and politics to sports.  However, because of the role that the digital age is having on how the world gets information and communicates, the field of journalism is evolving into areas that are not yet clearly defined.

Because of this, it is hard to tell what the future job market for journalists looks like.  On one hand, there will always be news jobs, however many of the traditional ones will continue to decline as new forms of news and information gathering and reporting emerge.
