Vocational
Funeral Service

Those who are employed in the funeral service industry work with clients during a very sensitive time in their lives. Funeral workers help families and friends with the rituals of burial, from transporting the body to preparing the remains and arranging services.

The most common training for becoming a funeral director or mortician is through a two-year program at community college, graduating with a degree in mortuary science. There are some colleges that offer a Bachelor’s degree in the field, and some students are required to go through apprenticeships or to become licensed.

Courses for mortuary science may include anatomy and physiology, pathology, embalming and restorative art. In addition to science courses, students will study social sciences such as psychology of death, death and children and social psychology. In addition, programs will offer business-based courses like computer science, economics and funeral management along with legal classes such as funeral service law, ethics and business law.

Funeral directors will take on all aspects of preparing and planning for a funeral, from the wake to the burial. Many funeral directors are trained in embalming, and will prepare the body for viewing. In addition, funeral directors will handle preparing paperwork related to the death, such as a death certificate.
