Vocational
Locksmithing

Locksmithing is the art of repairing, opening and creating locks. Modern locksmiths repair and open locks and safes, but mass produced locks have reduced the number of locksmiths that create their own products.

Students that wish to pursue a career as a locksmith will be required by most states to have a license. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, and proper locksmithing training. Courses are offered at various vocational schools and through the Associated Locksmiths of America.

Typical courses last a few days, and give students skills in making and duplicating keys, rekeying locks, picking locks, learning about combination locks and more. In many instances, potential employees can obtain this type of training on the job or with a future employer.

On a given day, a locksmith may assist someone locked out of a building or vehicle, install or service a surveillance system, or install safes in homes or businesses. A locksmith may repair a broken lock, make duplicate keys or reset safe combinations.
