Engineering

Engineering is based on problem solving and creating solutions to make things work and run better.  It is the perfect profession for those who want to fix things and make improvements.  It covers a wide range of disciplines, and there are limitless possibilities for the student to consider.

Engineering degrees cover a wide spectrum of concepts and principles that are intended to give a broad overview of the field.  From there, students can merge into a concentration which will prepare them to apply their skills in areas that they are interested in developing a career with.

From civil engineering to developing electrical systems or designing rockets, engineers make the world work better, more efficiently and with a greater degree of safety as a result of their work.  Students will have a wide selection of areas to enter into as they consider where their interests lie.

Many engineering degrees are time consuming and rigorous, and some schools have developed a five year undergraduate program to accommodate material that needs to be taught.  Also, there are many options for students who wish to further their studies at the graduate level, enabling them to master a track which they want to focus their attention and career on.

In addition to a basic degree, on the job training and continuing education are the norm in many facets of the engineering profession.  In many cases, certification and licensure is also required for a number of engineering disciplines. Advanced degrees are a necessary option for those who wish to become a specialist in certain areas, and they also tremendously increase the marketability of graduates.

The job outlook for engineering professions is generally average to above average, depending on the area of concentration graduates pursue.  This is especially true for civil engineers as new infrastructure projects become the norm.
