Nursing & Health
RN-BSN

If you’re already a nurse but want to take your knowledge, skills, and perhaps paycheck to the next level, transitioning from a registered nurse (RN) to earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a great option. The good news is that these programs can be completed either online or through traditional schools and are generally formatted to work around the busy schedules of nurses currently in the field.

Course of Study

Nurses who already have an Associate’s RN or are a licensed practical nurse (LPN) have learned the fundamentals. You’ve gone through the necessary math, science, and direct practice courses that allowed you to successfully complete the exams in your state and launch your nursing career. And while the BSN program will delve deeper into applied skills, it focuses mostly on academic topics that are similar to what other students earning a Bachelor’s Degree would study: social sciences like psychology, fine arts and humanities courses, economics, history, English and literature, and advanced sciences like physics. Of course, you’ll also take courses that apply directly to nursing, such as communicable disease care and treatment, research techniques, and understanding complex diseases.

Applying a Nursing Degree

You’ll likely find that your career options expand once you earn a BSN. In generally, employers prefer this degree because it demonstrates that students not only have the technical skills, but have also been trained in soft skills like effective communication and leadership skills as well. You can work in a hospital or clinic, doctor’s office, public or private healthcare facility, home health agency, or non-profit group.

Job Prospects

It’s no secret that there’s currently a shortage of nurses in the U.S., and the problem doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon. That shortage—of approximately 1 million nurses—means that current and future nurses have an excellent employment outlook. In fact, healthcare careers like nursing make up 10 of the top 20 fastest growing careers in the country.
